About Summiteer

~From Home to Blacko~

2nd May 2009

One way or another, sooner or later, I am going to walk from my home to The Lake District. The number of stages is undetermined, the final destination has not been decided. I am going to try to walk as close to my preferred driving route as possible. This is the first stage ....

Barrowford Park

Scroll down for photos and a description of the walk

Home on Clockhouse Avenue, Burnley

The idea behind my long walk plan is to take a closer look at the scenery around the roads that I use to travel to the Lake District, so the route will stay as close to tarmac route as possible. Home is at BB10 2SU if you fancy a peek. Google satellite images reveal one of our neighbours sunbathing topless on the day in question.*

Pendle Hill

This view is from the back fields, just three minutes from my front door.

Preston to Colne line at Brierfield Railway Station

I used to come here every morning for the train to school in Blackburn, two lines in those days, busy trains and a certain atmosphere that no longer exists. Unlike Settle and Hebden Bridge, I fear there is no "Friends of Brierfield Railway Station" ** see bottom of the page ...

Leeds & Liverpool Canal

This is Tunstill Mill and it used to be occupied by Smith & Nephew Textiles.

Typical Canal Scene on a sunny Spring day

The Goose Family

Barrowford Park

The road through Barrowford runs alongside the park. A popular facility with a bowling green, a duck pond and playgrounds. Home also to Pendle Heritage Centre.

A682

Lakes' traffic forks left here.

Blacko and a bit of Pendle Hill

Blacko Tower and The Sun Inn

I call it Blacko Tower, it is actually Stansfield Tower. It is on private land and cannot be visited.

End of Part 1

The roadside sign says "Historic West Riding of Yorkshire". I walked back into Barrowford and caught a bus back to within a quarter of mile of home.

Walkers: Just Me

Time taken: 3hrs 30 minutes to the bus stop in Barrowford. Distance of about 6 miles?

Route: Home to Edge End, Hard Platts, B&Q, L&L Canal to Barrowford, A682 through Blacko to the old county boundary, fields back past Water Meetings to Barrowford.

Weather and conditions: Fine Spring Day

Greetings Count: Rather High, the canal and Barrowford are popular places.

Richard's Refreshment Review: Nothing to report today.

* Only joking, but did you Google us?

** I stand to be corrected: Brierfield Railway Station
